South Korea announced on the 18th that it has agreed to cooperate with the United Arab Emirates on the "Stargate" project supported by the United States. The two countries will build a new large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) data park in the United Arab Emirates.
Reuters reported that when the cooperation agreement was announced, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung was visiting the United Arab Emirates to participate in the summit.
When U.S. tariff policies cast a shadow on the overall economic outlook, Lee Jae-myung, who took office on June 4 this year, prioritized promoting AI investment to stimulate economic growth, and South Korea set its sights on becoming a regional AI center.
Under the strategic framework agreement signed on the 18th, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates will deepen cooperation in the field of AI, including AI investment and infrastructure, AI supply chain and AI research and development.
Although the United States has previously restricted the export of advanced technology to the United Arab Emirates due to its close relationship with China, the "Stargate UAE" project is part of the agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump and aims to build the world's largest AI data center cluster outside the United States.
South Korean company Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix also signed a preliminary agreement in October this year, agreeing to supply memory chips for the Stargate Data Center of the US company OpenAI.
